Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Mariah Powers scored in the second overtime to lift Washington State to a 1-0 victory over visiting Oregon in Pac-12 women's soccer, Sunday.
A junior, Powers scored at 106:40 for her first goal as a Cougar. The game-winner came against the school she played for as a freshman. Beau Bremer dribbled to the middle from the left and sent a pass into the box that Powers redirected with a slide inside the near post.
“The play started from the back and Beau (Bremer) made the pass into the box,” Powers said. “It hit off me, then a defender and then it went in the goal.”
The assist by redshirt-junior Beau Bremer was her team-leading ninth point of the season. Washington State improved to 8-2-3, 3-2-1 in the Pac-12 while Oregon fell to 6-6-2, 2-3-1 in conference play.
“That was big three points for us today,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “We needed a win today before we head back out on the road next weekend. I am really happy for Mariah (Powers) and for our team.”
The goal by Powers was the latest by a Cougar since Oct. 28, 2011 when current teammate Jocelyn Jeffers scored at 107:02 in a 2-1 victory at Arizona State. That was also the last time, prior to Sunday, Washington State won a match that extended to a second overtime period.
The Cougars were outshot by the Ducks 12-10 in the match with goalkeeper Gurveen Clair asked to make two saves while recording her school-record 33rd-career shutout. Clair also started her 70th match in goal for Washington State, a school record.
Washington State moved into third place in the Pac-12 with 10 points. The Cougars travel to play Colorado, Friday at 3 p.m. Mountain/2 p.m. Pacific. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
