Cougars Earn a Point Against Sun Devils

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, Arizona State and Washington State played to a 0-0 draw in Pac-12 Conference women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Sunday.

Both the Sun Devils (8-2-4, 1-1-3 Pac-12) and Cougars (7-2-3, 2-2-1 Pac-12) entered the match ranked as high at 19th nationally and both controlled possession at various times throughout the match. It was Washington State that created the more dangerous chances, but Arizona State goalkeeper Chandler Morris was up to the challenge each time.

“We called their keeper into duty to make dramatic saves,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “Coming off a disappointing loss, Friday, to turn it around that quickly and play as well as we did makes me proud of our team. It shows the character of our team.”

The Cougars tied a school record, set in 2001, with 16 corner kicks, including eight in the first half. They held a 19-11 advantage in shots. In the second half, Washington State outshot Arizona State 10-3 and nearly scored a goal on several occasions.

In the 54th minute, a header by Jocelyn Jeffers was tipped over the bar by Morris. Jeffers's shot from distance hit the crossbar in the 60th minute. Kaitlyn Johnson had her chance 1v1 in the 89th minute, but again Morris was there for a save.

The best scoring chance in overtime came on a header by Nicole Setterlund in the 104th minute. This time Morris made a diving save to preserve the draw.

The Cougars host Oregon, Sunday at 1 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
