MAUI, Hawaii – The Washington State tennis team wrapped its two-match trip to the islands with a 4-03 victory over Hawaii Saturday afternoon. With the win the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the season while Hawaii falls to 1-5.
For the fourth time in as many attempts this season the Cougars captured the opening doubles point by claiming two of the three doubles matches. WSU dropped the match at No. 3 when the Hawaii duo of Sarah Gealer and Daquio posted a 6-4 win over Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic. Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht evened it with a 7-5 win at No. 1 when they defeated Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova. With the win the Cougars No. 1 pair improved to 4-0 in dual matches this season. With the doubles point on the line, WSU's Maria Biryukova and Olga Musilovich needed a tiebreaker but eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-4) over Cindy Nguyen and Rebecca Faltusz to secure the point.
In singles play WSU quickly extended the lead to 2-0 as Biryukova rolled over Gealer, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. Faltusz put Hawaii on the board as she defeated Ognjenovic 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 followed shortly by Nguyen's 6-4, 6-2 win over Luzina at No. 1, evening the match.
At No. 5 Musilovich put the Cougars back on top as she improved to 4-00 in dual play this season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Petriskova followed shortly by Koning's match-clinching, 6-2, 6-4 win over Daquio at No. 5. The final match of the day went to a third set before Suworowa pulled out a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 10-4 win at No. 2.
The Cougars are next in action when they continue their four-match road trip by facing Montana in Missoula, Friday, Jan. 31.
