STANFORD, Calif. – Nick Tanielu was 4-for-4 and Washington State routed Stanford 10-1 in Pac-12 Conference baseball, Sunday.
With the victory, the Cougars (23-27, 13-14 Pac-12) salvaged the final game of the weekend series with the Cardinal (26-23, 13-14).
Tanielu doubled and drove in a run to lead a 12-hit attack in support of Tanner Chleborad (4-6). Stanford managed one run on three hits against Chleborad, who struck out four and walked two.
The Cougars got on the board first with a run in the fourth against Cardinal starter Logan James (2-3). Tanielu led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Yale Rosen singled to send Tanielu to third and P.J. Jones drove in the run with a ground out.
In the fifth, Ben Roberts drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a two-out single by Tanielu. The Cardinal's lone run came in the bottom half of the frame on a back-to-back singles and a double play ball.
Washington State blew the game open with five runs in the eighth off the Stanford bullpen. The Cougars loaded the bases on a single by Michael Monda, a double by Tanielu and a walk to Rosen. With one out, Patrick McGrath walked to force in a run. A wild pitch brought home the second run of an inning. After Ian Sagdal reached on a fielder's choice out, Roberts walked to load the bases. Trace Tam Sing followed with a bases-clearing double for a 7-1 lead.
The Cougars tacked on three runs in the ninth to complete the lopsided victory. Wes Leow opened with a pinch hit single, Tanielu was hit by a pitch and Cameron Frost singled to load the bases. Cooper Elliott plated a run with a pinch hit single. After McGrath bounced into a 5-2-3 double play, a Stanford error allowed a run to score. Roberts capped the rally with a run-scoring single.
Washington State concludes its four-game road trip at Seattle, Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
