SAN DIEGO – The Washington State University women's rowing team competed in day one of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Mission Bay. All four Cougar boats advanced to their respective Grand Finals.
Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said, "It has been a couple of years since we raced all four entries into the grand finals. This is a great start to our season. We are pumped up and ready for tomorrow."
In the first women's flight of the morning, WSU's varsity eight (bow - Isabella Watt, Kendall Boliba, Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare, Mollie McCabe, Jordan Watson, Morgan Cathrea, Elise Jones, coxswain - Sarah Wu) took second in flight A of the Women's Collegiate Varsity Invitational with a time of 6:38.218. The Cougar women finished less than six seconds behind No. 6 USC's varsity eight (6:32.692). Behind the Cougars were No. 15 Wisconsin (6:39.995), Miami (6:53.995), and Texas (6:57.566). Washington State, USC, and Wisconsin will compete in the Grand Final on Sunday.
The Cougar women's varsity four (bow - Kim Coon, Chloe Rogers, Alex Waddell, Carly Johnson, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) also took second in its flight. California (7:29.023), ranked second nationally, finished just three seconds ahead of WSU (7:32.674). San Diego finished behind WSU with a time of 7:32.722. California, Washington State, and San Diego will compete Sunday in the Grand Final.
In the third event WSU competed, the second varsity eight (bow - Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Kayla Wakulich, Kerry Hassall, Noel Christiansen, Carter Marks, Ieva Adomaviciute, Emily Starkel, Megan McDonald, coxswain - Emily Boquet) finished second in flight B of the Women's Collegiate Second Varsity. The Cougars finished in 6:43.811, less than two seconds behind No. 2 California (6:41.874). California and Washington State advance to the Grand Final.
To close the day for the Cougars, the novice eight (bow - Brittany Brooks, Lori VerMurlen, Hunter Jones, Kacie Hillery, Jessi Howe, Jordyn Erno, Christina Larsen, Hannah Erickson, coxswain - Zoey Haver) placed second with a time of 7:10.594. No. 2 California took the win with a time of 6:59.917 and USC finished third with a time of 7:11.691. All three boats advance to the Grand Final.
