PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Olga Musilovich provided the lone bright spot for Washington State as the Cougars dropped its Pac-12 Conference opener to No. 18 California, 6-1, Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Cal began the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the opening point. At No. 1, the WSU pairing of Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina fell to the No. 30 duo of Anett Schutting and Lynn Chi, 8-1. Lize Leenknecht and Musilovich ran into similar troubles at No. 2, being bested by California's Tayler Davis and Klara Fabikova, 8-3. Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe fell to Laura Posylkin and Kelly Chui 8-5 at No. 3.

The Cougars (10-3) had no answer for Cal (6-4) in singles play. Musilovich provided the only point for the Cougars Friday afternoon at No. 5. The match was pushed to a third set where a tiebreaker was played with the team match already decided. Musilovich was able to outlast her opponent in the third set, defeating Alice Duranteau 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). The win extends Musilovich's dual win streak to 12 on the season.

At No. 1 Vasilieva fell to the nation's No. 8 player, Schutting 6-0, 6-1 while Googe ran into similar troubles at No. 2, falling to No. 49 Chi 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, Kankaras could not overcome the early deficit, being bested by No. 117 Fabikova, 6-2, 6-1. Luzina fell to Davis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Koning fell to Annie Goransson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Cougars continue weekend play Saturday when they take on No. 20 Stanford at noon.
