SEATTLE/ALBUQUERQUE - Washington State freshman Byron Howell won the men's 200m dash Friday night at the Husky Classic track and field meet at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle and senior Stephan Scott Ellis won the men's long jump at the Don Kirby Collegiate Elite meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Howell, from Seattle, won the men's 200m dash in a lifetime-best time 21.78 seconds while fellow Cougar freshman Dana Wells finished sixth in 22.14.
In the men's 5000m run, Drew Jordan, running unattached, finished ninth in a time of 14-minutes 8.46 seconds and Andrew Kimpel took 11th among the 85 runners in a time of 14:09.06.
WSU highlights from Albuquerque included Scott-Ellis, from Tacoma, winning the men's long jump with a season-best leap of 24-feet 11 1/4 inches (7.60m). Kelsey Bueno finished tied for sixth and Kristine Felix was 11th in the women's unseeded pole vault, both clearing a PR height of 12-10 1/4 (3.92m).
On the track, Andre McBride took sixth place in the 200m dash with a PR time of 21.50.
Cindy Robinson ran a 60m dash PR time of 7.52 in the women's prelims for fifth place and the finished eighth in the final with another PR time of 7.51. Shawn Fermin took sixth place in the 400m dash with a season-best time of 54.27. The Cougar women's 4x400m relay team of Dominique Keel, Bree Winfrey, Fermin and Erin Allen ran a season-best time of 3:42.99 for fifth place.
Cougars will continue competition at both Seattle and Albuquerque Saturday as the Husky Classic concludes with a full day of events and the Don Kirby Open takes place in New Mexico.
