Complete Results

NAMPA, Idaho - The Washington State men won seven titles, the Cougar women won five events, and a women's relay team ran a school freshman record time Saturday afternoon at the Boise State Bronco Invitational meet at the Jacksons Track in the Idaho Center in Nampa.

WSU men grabbing field event wins included senior All-American PJ Benedictus (sophomore, Renton) reached a lifetime-best distance of 22-10 1/2 (6.97m) for second place. Ross VanZanten (senior, Longview, Wash.) won the high jump with a PR height of 6-9 3/4 (2.08m) and Sean Harris was second after clearing the bar at 6-4 3/4 (1.95m). Curtis Flolid (sophomore, Woodinville, Wash.) won the pole vault with the bar at 14-5 1/4 (4.40m) and Harris was vault runner-up at 13-11 1/4 (4.25m).

Trevor Rogers was second in a PR time of 6.91 and Brett Blanshan was third in a time of 7.00. Later in the day, Blanshan was the runner-up in the 200m dash (21.80) and Andre McBride finished third (21.95).

Rashaun Johnson fifth (50.79). Jesse Jorgensen (redshirt sophomore, Puyallup) and Todd Wakefield finished one-two in the 800m with Jorgensen's time 1:52.60 and Wakefield running a PR time of 1:53.02. At the end of the meet, Brunson, Sealby, Jorgensen and Johnson won the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:19.78. Garrett Gerling ran a 60m hurdles PR time in the prelims of 8.21 and followed with another PR time of 8.20 for second place in the final. Also running high hurdles PR times were Josiah Sims, 8.25 in the prelims, and Harris, 8.31 in the final.

In the mile, Andrew Gonzales was fourth in a PR time of 4:12.79.

Winning the women's 4x400m relay was Bree Winfrey (freshman, Mission Hills, Calif.), Bria'una Watley (redshirt sophomore, Granada Hills, Calif.), Shawna Fermin (senior, Victorville, Calif.) and Erin Allen (sophomore, Kenmore, Wash.) who ran a time 3:49.03. This WSU team just edged out the all-freshman squad of Kris Tollefson (Seattle), Christiana Ekelem (Etiwanda, Calif.), Dominique Keel (Beaverton, Ore.) and Mercedes Smith (Country Club Hills, Ill.) who finished second in a time of 3:49.62, breaking the school freshman record time run in 2001 by over three seconds.

Earlier in the day, Winfrey won the 400m dash in a time of 57.32 with Smith third (57.77), Allen fourth (58.31), and Ekelem sixth (58.72). In the 200m dash, Keel ran a lifetime-best time of 24.65 seconds for second place while Fermin took fourth (24.85), and Watley ran a PR time of 25.19 (eighth).

Other Cougar women winning at Nampa included Kristine Felix (freshman, Wailuku, Hawai'i) in the pole vault after clearing a height of 12-feet 4 3/4 inches (3.78m). Kelsey Bueno finished second in the vault after going over the bar at 11-10 3/4 (3.63m). Holly Parent (junior, Victoria, B.C.) won the high jump with a leap of 5-7 (1.70m).

On the track, Ruby Roberts won the 800m (2:14.00) with Courtney Zalud second (2:15.38) and Caroline Austin fourth (2:15.83). Cindy Robinson finished third in 60m dash with a time of 7.66 in the final. Emily Dwyer (freshman, Sammamish) ran a PR time in the mile of 5:16.90 (fifth place).

"I'm very pleased with the effort of the Cougars today. It was a good meet here in Boise," WSU Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "There were a lot of positive things, a real step up from last week as people were competing in their events for the first time and coming out and preforming well. It was a good day for us in Moscow too. We need to keep everybody healthy and keep the season moving in the right direction."

Cougar highlights from the Vandal Indoor meet at Moscow Saturday included Drew Jordan (junior, Medford, Ore.), running unattached, won in a time of 8:26.00 followed by Jono Lafler, Justin Englund and Forrest Shaffer. Multi-events specialist Spencer Wordell reached PRs in 60m dash of 7.16 and the 60m hurdles of 8.62.

WSU hosts the Cougar Indoor team scoring meet Jan. 25-26 at the Indoor Facility.

MORE COACH SLOAN QUOTES FROM BRONCO INVITE: "We had solid performances in the men's hurdles. Ross VanZanten with a lifetime best in the high jump and he had a couple of good looks at seven-feet, quarter inch so that should be attainable in his near future.

"The women's freshman relay team had a good run today and they will race again this year when they are in a little better shape and have race a little bit more so we should see that time knocked down more. I was happy with Erin Allen looked strong in both runs. Kristine Felix performed well today after the no height last weekend. She's an inch off her all-time best of her junior year in high school and back in the groove now. With Kelsey going good too we should have two vaulters going 13-feet in the very near future."
