PULLMAN, Wash. - On a calm day at Washington State University's Palouse Ridge Golf Course, the Washington State women's golf team, led by sophomore Kristen Rue, shot 9-over par to sit at second place after day one of the WSU Cougar Cup. Rue shares the individual lead of the tournament with her score of even-par. The WSU women trail California by four strokes as they head into Tuesday's final round of competition.
Rue put forth a combined score over the first two rounds of 144. Her consistent effort had her tied for the lead after the first round at 1-under par. She shares the number-one spot on the leaderboard at the conclusion of day one with Victoria Fallgren and Raychelle Santos of Gonzaga, and Jaqueline Williams of California.
WSU's Mallory Kent joined Rue in the top 10 on the leaderboard. Kent placed tied for ninth with a score to par after the first two rounds of 3-over. Lindsay Harmon is not far behind, tied for 14th at 4-over.
"I'm very excited about the way we closed out both rounds today," Washington State Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "We were able to finish strong and put ourselves in a good position heading into tomorrow. Our players continue to impress me with their attitudes and their fight. Tomorrow should be fun."
The Washington State women's team leads regional rivals Gonzaga, Idaho, and Eastern Washington, who are in third, sixth, and 12th, respectively.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. Live results will be available during tournament play at www.golfstat.com. Final results of the tournament will be posted online at wsucougars.com at the conclusion of the competition.
