Cougars Fall to No. 5 Stanford

Ojai, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team captured all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over No. 31 Washington State in a Pac-12 Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The match was originally scheduled for March 25 in Stanford but was postponed due to rain. In today's match Stanford (18-1, 9-1 Pac-12) captured the opening doubles point against Washington State (18-6, 6-4) and never looked back.

At No. 1 doubles the nation's second-ranked duo of Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs posted an 9-8 (7-4) win over WSU's Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe. At No. 2 Stanford's Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay, ranked 25th nationally, defeated Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina, 8-4, while Stanford made it a sweep at when Natalie Dillon and Veronica Li defeated Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning, 8-5, at No. 3.

In singles play the Cardinal took the first four matches in straight sets. At No. 1 Gibbs, ranked third in the nation, defeated No. 50 Vasilieva, 6-2, 6-3 while No. 5 Burdette posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over No. 108 Fournier at second singles.

Tan, ranked 57th, defeated Googe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 while No. 65 Tsay earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kankaras at No. 4. At No. 6 Koning went three sets with Dillon, capturing the first 6-1 before Dillon fought back in the second 6-1. With the team decision no longer in doubt, a 10-point tiebreaker was played, with Dillon capturing a 10-8 victory.

The final match of the day came at No. 5 where Li won two close sets, 7-5, 6-4, to close out the match.

The Cougars are next in action Thursday when they participate in the 2012 Pac-12 Conference Championships in Ojai.
