Cougars Conclude Play at Pac-12 Championships

Cougars Top Buffs, 6-1

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's tennis team defeated the Buffs of Colorado, 6-1 Friday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 14-5, 3-3 in Pac-12 play while the Buffs fall to 7-9, 0-5 in Pac-12 play.

The Cougars started off strong by sweeping the doubles matches for the opening point. At No. 3 Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning defeated Erin Sanders and Ashley Tiefel. The Buffs went up 1-0 early but the Cougars rallied back to secure the win at 8-2. On court two, Elizaveta Luzina and Liudmila Vasilieva matched up against Carla Manzi Tenorio and Kristina Schleich at No. 2 doubles. Luzina and Vasilieva took and early lead but the Buffs came back to make it 5-4 before the Cougars took the win at 8-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras played a close match against Winde Janssens and Julyette Steur. On court one, the Cougars took the lead before the Buffs made it 4-4. In the only doubles match that went to a tiebreaker set, given the match point had already been awarded, Googe and Kankaras took the win at 7-6 (7-1).

In singles play, five Cougars came out on top. On court two, No. 125 Fournier took on Janssens and fought back from one set down to take the win at 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On court four, Kankaras faced Sanders and took an early 2-0 lead and captured the first set. Kankaras was one of four Cougars to win in straight-sets and took the win at 6-1, 6-1. Improving her 2011-12 record to 21-12. Googe quickly made it a 3-0 lead for the Cougars defeating Steur 6-3, 6-3 on court three.

At No. 5 singles, Luzina took the lead and never looked back defeating Tenorio in straight-sets 6-1, 6-2. The win increased WSU's lead to 5-0. Koning had no trouble with Tiefel winning 6-0, 6-2. In the longest match of the day, at No. 1 singles, No. 48 Vasilieva and Schleich battled it out on court one. Vasilieva took the first set at 7-6 and battled through the second set as Schleich took the point at 4-6. In the third set, Vasilieva took a 4-3 lead before Schleich took the only point for the Buffs by defeating Vasilieva in three sets at 7-6, 4-6, 4-6.

The Cougars return to Hollingbery Fieldhouse Sunday, April 1 to take on Utah. The match time is set for 11 a.m.
