Cougars Sweep Past Portland, 7-0

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's tennis team opened up a six-match home stand by defeating the University of Portland, 7-0, Thursday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

With the win the Cougars improve to 13-5 while the Pilots fall to 4-9.

The day began with doubles play where the Cougars captured the opening point by sweeping all three matches. Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe won 8-5 at No. 1 over Alice Tucker and Emily Mahairas while Liudmila Vasilieva and Elisabeth Fournier defeated Sabine Fuchs and Gabrielle Gorence 8-2 at No. 2. At No. 3, the Cougar duo of Olga Musilovich and Charlotte Koning had little trouble with Valeska Hoath and Katy Krauel, winning 8-4.

In singles play Googe increased WSU's lead to 2-0 as she easily defeated Mahairas, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. Googe won for the fourth time in her past five matches and improved to 22-9 for the season. Kankaras quickly followed as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tucker at No. 4. Kankaras became the fifth Cougar player this season with 20-plus wins, improving her 2011-12 record to 20-12.

At the top singles spot Vasilieva justified her No. 48 national ranking as she recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win over Fuchs. Vasilieva improved to 28-4 on the season, tying for the second-most single-season wins in school history. At No. 2 Fournier defeated Hoath, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 26-6 for the season.

At No. 5 Koning had no trouble with Gorence, winning 6-0, 6-0 while Elizaveta Luzina, playing for the first time in the past four match due to a leg injury, showed no signs of rust as she won 6-0, 6-0 over Krauel.

The Cougars return to Pac-12 Conference play Friday morning when they host Colorado at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
