SPOKANE -- The Washington State University women captured seven wins and the Cougar men tallied five victories Saturday in the chilly and blustery outdoor track and field opening competition at the Dusty Lane Open meet at Spokane Falls Community College.
On the track, Shaquana Logan (junior, Tacoma) led a first through fourth finish for the WSU women in the 100m hurdles, running a time of 14.25 seconds. Logan was followed by Morgan Clem (14.58), Devin Brooks (14.71), and Andrea Smith (15.43). Brittney Crabb (senior, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) won the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:05.93. Caroline Austin (junior, Chehalis) and Ruby Roberts (sophomore, Kingston) finished one-two in the 800m with times of 2:17.18 and 2:19.80, respectively. The 4x400m relay squad of Holly DeHart, Candii McFarland, Zalud and Austin won in a time of 4:04.60.
In women's field events, Carly Fitzpatrick (junior, Sumner) won the pole vault after clearing 11-feet, 5 3/4 inches (3.50m), and Christine Rice (junior, Ridgefield) won the high jump with a leap of 5-5 3/4 (1.67m). Long jumpers Zoe Moller (freshman, Bellingham) and Lauran Johnson (junior, Vallejo, Calif.) finished one-two after both reached a distance of 17-6 (5.33m).
For the Cougar men on the track, Todd Wakefield (sophomore, Kearns, Australia) led a first through fourth WSU finish in the 800m with a time of 1:53.93. Following Wakefield were Andrew Kimpel (1:55.47), Matt Cronrath (1:56.98), and Nick Smith (1:57.29). Josiah Sims (junior, Tacoma) won the 110m hurdles in a lifetime-best time of 14.88. J Hopkins (senior, Everett) led a one-two-three WSU finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.53; Rashaun Johnson was second in 54.62, and Dana Wells was third in 54.89. Lee George (redshirt freshman, Ferndale) won the 1500m in a PR time of 3:56.82 and Mack Young (sophomore, Redmond) finished second in a time of 3:57.80. Stephan Scott-Ellis captured the 100m dash in a time of 11.43 after running into a stiff headwind.
Another notable performance came from freshman Sam Ferenchak (Vancouver, Wash.) who threw the javelin 206-6 (62.95m) for fifth place. Ferenchak's series included a throw of 204-10 (62.43m) and a toss of 199-1 (60.70m).
"This meet gave us a pretty good idea of where we are in our performances and decide who will compete for us the next two weeks," Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "I was happy with the efforts of Sam Ferenchak today. He was putting them out there pretty good. I think Todd Wakefield's 800 was pretty good especially in the conditions today. Happy with Josiah Sims in the high hurdles running into headwind with cold conditions and still getting a PR and running faster than he even ran over high school high hurdles. I was happy that Oliver Henry reached a PR in the discus (163-5)."
WSU's track and field teams travel to Los Angeles for the USC Trojan Invitational Mar. 23-24.
