PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University women's tennis team defeated Brighman Young University 7-0 as Liudmila Vasilieva extended her win streak to 16, Friday at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
For the second time in the past four matches, the Cougars (9-2) captured the opening doubles point, winning two of the opening matches. At No. 1 doubles, Vasilieva and Andjela Kankaras dropped the match to Megan Price and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon 8-4. Elizaveta Luzina and Olga Musilovich took an early 2-0 lead to win the match 8-2 at No. 2 and Elisabeth Fournier and Charlotte Koning defeated Desiree Tran and Morgan Anderson 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Washington State came back fighting in singles play and were up early in most first sets. Fournier defeated Price in straights-sets, 6-3, 6-3, to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead at No. 2 singles. This victory now extends her all-time wins to 97. At No. 1 singles, Vasilieva took down Tran in two sets to clinch another point for the Cougars, 7-6, 6-0.
At fourth singles, Luzina defeated Sheehan-Dizon, 6-4, 6-4, ending her four game winning streak, the longest of any BYU player this season. Olga Musilovich stepped in at No. 6 singles and beat Lisa Waldron 6-2 in the first set before Waldron retired shortly after beginning the second set.
Koning's 6-1, 6-3 win over Aubrey Paul at No. 5 singles and Kankaras' well-fought win over Anderson, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 at No. 3 secured the Cougar's 7-0 win.
Up next, the Cougars will travel to Los Angeles to take on UCLA Friday, March 9 and USC Saturday, March 10.
