PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University women's tennis team opened the dual match season by defeating Lewis-Clark State and Idaho in a doubleheader at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse, Thursday.

In the morning match against Lewis-Clark State, the Cougars started off strong by sweeping the three doubles matches for the opening point. Junior Andjela Kankaras and junior Ksenia Googe defeated Dominika Jasova and Dorothy Chong 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, junior Liudmila Vasilieva and freshman Elizaveta Luzina defeated Samantha Steigen and Barb Sneckner 8-0 which was quickly followed by senior Elisabeth Fournier and sophomore Olga Musilovich's 8-1 win over Marina Wold and Bryn Olivera at No. 3.

In singles play, at No. 1, Vasilieva defeated Jasova 6-4, 6-1 and Fournier defeated Chong in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. At No.3, Googe beat Sneckner 6-1, 6-1 and Kankaras defeated Steigen 6-0, 6-0, in the fourth spot. Luzina saw her first dual match as a Cougar and responded with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miranda Duggan at No. 5. At No. 6, freshman Charlotte Koning defeated Wold 6-1, 6-1.

The Cougars all-time record against Lewis-Clark State was extended to 16-0.

In the afternoon match against Idaho, the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead after doubles play.

In doubles competition, at No. 1 Vasilieva and Luzina fell to Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz 9-7. Kankaras and Musilovich defeated Molly Knox and Sophie Vickers 9-8 (7-5) in a tiebreaker at No. 2 while at No. 3 Fournier and Koning defeated Alejandra Lozano and Beatriz Flores 8-5.

In singles play, the Cougars swept all six matches against the Vandals. At No. 1, Vasilieva defeated V. Lozano in three sets 6-2, 7-6, 6-2. Fournier defeated Sanz 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while at No.3 Googe defeated Vickers 7-6, 6-1. Kankaras defeated Knox 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 and Luzina beat A. Lozano 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. At No. 6 Musilovich defeated Flores 6-2, 6-4.

The Cougars host Sacramento State Sunday, Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. on the Simmelink Tennis Courts.
