EUGENE, Ore. - The Washington State University tennis team lost a close one to the Oregon Ducks Saturday in Eugene. The Cougs dropped the match 4-3 to move to 9-11 overall and 1-4 in Pacific-10 Conference play.

Freshmen Andjela Kankaras and Ksenia Googe defeated Patricia Skowronski and Emmanuelle Cor, 8-6, to prevent an Oregon sweep of the doubles matches.

After Oregon won the first singles match at the No. 5 spot, the Cougars won the next two matches to tie the score 2-2.

Elisabeth Fournier earned her seventeenth victory of the season with a win in the No. 1 spot against Julia Metzger, 6-3, 6-0. Googe tied the match with a win over Trudie du Toit, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.

Oregon took the next match at the No. 6 spot, but WSU fought back again tying the match with a win from Kankaras at the No. 4 spot.

The match came down to No. 2 singles with Liudmila Vasilieva battling Pavlina Smatova to three sets. Smatova prevailed winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and capturing the victory for the Ducks.

The Cougar tennis team returns to Pullman to conclude their 2010 regular season. The Cougs play five matches April 8-11. WSU will continue Pac-10 play in their first match Thursday against No. 12 Stanford. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
