BERKELEY, Calif. - The Washington State women's basketball team completed its opening week of Pacific-10 Conference play against its second consecutive ranked opponent, falling to No. 11 California 99-44 at the Haas Pavilion.
WSU, now 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10, also fell to second-ranked Stanford Friday in its conference opener, Dec. 28. California improved to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference action.
"We made a lot of progress tonight," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "The team stayed in the game plan for a full 40 minutes. That is a big step, especially against the No. 11 team in the country."
Sophomore guard Alexa Price led the Cougars with a career-high 14 points after hitting each of her first four 3-point attempts. Junior center Ebonee Coates pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds, the most by a Cougar in a game this season. Sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge led WSU with five assists.
"Ebonee Coates had by far her best game since I've been here, Daugherty said. "We had a lot of individual efforts that are worthy of commending."
Junior guard Katie Appleton's 3-pointer against California placed her in sole possession of ninth place on the WSU all-time career list. Appleton now has 89 career 3-point baskets, passing former Cougar Julie Wright (1994-96).
After starting their Pac-10 season on the road the Cougars return home to play host to Washington Jan. 4 (Friday). The game with the Huskies is the inaugural "Cougs Have Heart" women's basketball game to raise awareness for heart disease. The contest, slated to tip-off at 7 p.m., will also be broadcast live on Fox Sports Northwest.
