BERKELEY, Calif.(AP)- Marquise Kately came off the bench for a team-high 17
points and Cal kept its Pacific-10 Conference hopes alive Saturday by beating
Washington State, 63-57, in overtime in the final game of the regular season
for both teams.
The victory left Cal (13-15, 6-12)rooting for UCLA to beat Oregon in a later
game to slip the Bears into the conference tournament, which begins Thursday at
the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
An Oregon victory would keep Cal out of the tournament for the second
straight year. Washington State (12-15, 7-11) was guaranteed a conference
tournament spot coming into the game.
Cougars guard Thomas Kelati led all scorers with 29 points, a career-high.
His three-point jumper, with seven seconds to play in regulation, sent the game
into overtime, tied, 50-50.
Kelati also broke a 54-54 tie with 2:13 to go in overtime with a
three-pointer that represented the last points of the day for Washington State.
Two free throws by Richard Midgley and a basket by Kately put the Bears in
front for good, 58-57, with 1:26 remaining.
Rod Benson's turnaround bank shot 42 seconds from the end of the five-minute
extra period gave the Bears a three-point cushion, 60-57
Kelati's 25-foot attempt to tie bounced off with 24 seconds remaining, and
the game ended in a flurry of Cal free throws.
