MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) - Jeff Varem's two-handed dunk with 1.2 seconds remaining
edged Washington State to a 37-36 victory over Idaho Tuesday in a game marked
by poor shooting from both teams.
The Cougars (3-1) won despite shooting 26 percent from the field in the
game. Idaho (0-5) was equally poor from the field, making just 24.5 percent of
its shots.
Varem's game-winner came on an inbound pass from Kyle Weaver from under the
WSU basket. The play was set up when Idaho's Dandrick Jones lost a rebound out
of bounds after it appeared Jones had secured the ball and the Idaho victory.
Moments earlier, Jones tipped in a missed free throw to give the Vandals a
lead at 36-35. WSU's Thomas Kelati followed with a fadeway jump shot from 15
feet that rattled off the rim, then in and out of the hands of Jones to set up
the final play.
Kelati led WSU with 11 points and was the only player in the game to score
in double figures. Weaver and Varem added seven points apiece for the Cougars,
who led for all but about five minutes of the game but never by more six
points.
Anton Lyons led Idaho with eight points and 11 rebounds. The Vandals made
just one of seven free throws in the second half, and missed four free throws
in the game's final 38 seconds.
The victory marked WSU's second straight against Idaho.
The Vandals have not started a season 0-5 since the 1975-76 season. Idaho
played without starting guard Jerod Haynes, a freshman sidelined with a knee
injury.
