SEATTLE (AP) - Will Conroy scored 14 points and Curtis Allen added 13 off
the bench as Washington handed last-place Washington State its 16th straight
Pacific-10 loss, 81-67, on Friday night.
The Cougars' last conference win came Jan. 31, 2002, in Pullman against the
Huskies.
Washington (8-10 overall, 3-6 Pac-10) handed Washington State (5-13, 0-9)
its ninth consecutive defeat, all in league play.
Doug Wrenn had 11 points for the Huskies, who were coming off losses of 25
points at Oregon and 20 points at Oregon State last week.
For Washington State, Cedrick Hughey had 15 points, Thomas Kelati 13 and
Milton Riley 12. Hughey was the top rebounder in the game with eight as the
Cougars had a 41-31 rebounding advantage.
The Huskies pulled steadily ahead in the second half after being in front by
eight points at halftime. Washington led only 49-42 with six minutes gone in
the second half when Wrenn made a short jump hook, Bobby Jones sank a free
throw and Allen had his third 3-pointer of the game for a 55-42 lead with 12:15
left.
Washington built its lead to 19 points twice - 71-52 and 73-54 - in the
final six minutes.
The Huskies led 38-30 at halftime, after taking a 19-11 lead with 9:20 left
in the first half on four 3-pointers in a row. Nate Robinson tied the score at
9 with a 3-pointer and Allen, Mike Jensen and Allen again then connected.
The 5-foot-9 Robinson, a freshman and a starting cornerback on the
Washington football team, made a spectacular play with 3:03 remaining. He drove
to the basket, took a shot in the paint, caught the rebound while still in the
air and put back the shot in traffic to put Washington ahead 32-23.
Washington shot 50 percent (28 for 56) from the floor.
It was Washington's eighth victory in a row over Washington State in
Seattle. The Cougars haven't beaten the Huskies in Seattle since Jan. 29, 1994,
in Kelvin Sampson's final season at Washington State before he went to
Oklahoma.
