MOSCOW, Idaho - The WSU women's tennis team dominated the courts Thursday as it shutout the University of Idaho Vandals 9-0 in a dual hosted by Idaho at the Memorial Courts in Moscow.
WSU is now 11-11 overall and 1-7 in Pac-10 competition
"I am very proud of the way the players came out, they kept their game and competed very well," head coach Cari Groce said.
Senior team captain Melissa Pine (Newfoundland, Canada) defeated Idaho's Barbora Kudilkova 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Pine also teamed up with Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) to defeat Idaho's Barbora Kudilkova and Pooja Deshmukh 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles position.
"We had performance goals," Pine said. "We just went out there to achieve them, and we did. We were very confident coming in, we know we have a strong team and we knew that we would pull through all the way."
The Cougars will host the No. 25 Huskies Saturday at noon at the Stadium Way Tennis Center as they wrap up their regular season action. The Cougars lost 3-6 to the Huskies earlier in the season in Seattle.
"I think its the best way we can prepare for them, because it gives us a lot of confidence and a practice match at the same time," senior Patrycja Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland) said. "I think we are ready for them because we were in a similar situation last year where we lost the first one to them, and then we came back and beat them on our courts. I think they will remember that they lost on our courts. And that gives us confidence."
Saturday's match will also mark the end of Gajdzik and Pine's collegiate tennis careers.
"I have a lot of emotion about it," Pine said. "It's going to have to be something I'm going to block out so I can concentrate on the match and finish strong."
"It hasn't really hit me yet," Gajdzik said. "I'm so into each specific match, that I don't think that this is going to be my last one."
