Women's Soccer Handed First Loss Of Season

Sept. 6, 1999

MOSCOW, Idaho. - The Washington State University women's soccer team lost its first game of the season 2-1 to Idaho in the final game of the Governor's Cup.

The Cougars (1-1) couldn't take advantage of a strong wind in the first half as the both teams scored a goal in the final five minutes of the half.

Idaho (2-0-1) struck first when Christine Rennick took a rebound inside the 18-yard box and struck a shot past WSU goalie Lindsey Jorgensen in the 40th minute. The goal was the first scored on Jorgensen in 260 minutes dating back to last year.

WSU tied the score in the 44th minute when Brianne Carmody trapped a Beth Childs cross behind two defenders and scored on Vandal goalie Jenell Miller.

In the second half, Idaho took advantage of the wind and dominated play. Although the ball was in WSU's defensive half of the field for a majority of the final 45 minutes, Idaho only managed one goal when Sara Best headed a rebound past Jorgensen in the 54th minute.

"We didn't look very sharp," said WSU coach Dan Tobias. "We were a step slow all game."

Five freshmen started and another came in off the bench as the Cougars roster was depleted for various reasons. Starting defenders Meagin Donovan (red card) and Liz Duncan (team suspension) as well as midfielders Lindsey Millspaugh (back), Natalie Kehl (knee), Jen Burrough (team suspension) and Valerie Whitemaine (knee) all watched from the sidelines.

Idaho won the Governor's Cup with a 1-0-1 record in the tournament. Idaho State also had a 1-0-1 record, but placed second due to a tiebreaker. WSU finished third and Boise State placed fourth.

The next match for the Cougars is Friday when Louisville travels to Pullman for a 3 p.m. match at Cougar Soccer Field.
