Second-Half Goals Help Propel Cougars Past Boise State, 2-0

Sept. 4, 1999

MOSCOW, Idaho. - After playing a lackluster first half, the WSU women's soccer team scored two, quick second-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Boise State in the Governor's Cup.

"We're happy we got a good result in our first match," said WSU coach Dan Tobias. "I really felt like Boise State had most of the run (of play) in the first half. It may have been first game jitters perhaps, but the good thing was we came out at the half."

Ashley Honda (Vancouver, Wash.) and Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) each scored within the first five minutes of the second half and Cougar goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) made eight saves to nail down her seventh career shutout.

"We were much more organized defensively," Tobias said. "People were closing down quicker and we were winning balls in their half of the field. I feel better about our run of play in the second half."

The first goal came when forward Kristin Mak (Redmond, Wash.) intercepted a pass and hit a through ball behind the defense. Honda ran onto the ball and took advantage of her one-on-one with Boise State's goalie.

Washington State's second goal came when midfielder Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) hit a diagonal cross to DeWitt, who hit a left-footed bender past the goalie and two defenders for the final goal.

Senior Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind.) received two separate yellow cards during the match and will be forced to miss Monday's game against Idaho. Donovan has played in all 55 matches since she arrived at WSU in 1996.

Four freshman cracked the starting lineup for the Cougs. Niki Ironside (Kent, Wash.), Erin Cook (Portland, Ore.), Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.) and Honda all made their first collegiate starts.

"We started four freshmen today," Tobias said. "Getting them that kind of match experience will be good for the team."
