MISSOULA, Mont. - Host Montana scored three goals during a span of 14 minutes in the second half and went on to rout Washington State 4-0 Sunday in the final game of the Diadora Cup.
"It was a very poor performance on our part," said WSU coach Dan Tobias, whose team lost to Utah 3-1 Saturday in the tournament's first game. "It was not a good weekend. I'm not pleased with the results. I'm not pleased with the level of play."
It was the first time this season that the Cougars (3-3) were held scoreless. Montana (3-3) also became the first team to score four goals on WSU in almost one year. Minnesota last accomplished that feat in a 4-2 win September 21, 1998.
The Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead just before halftime on Heidi Melville's goal in the 43rd minute. The second half scoring barrage started in the 51st minute when Jodi Campbell capitalized on a defensive break down. Eight minutes later, Heather Olsen added Montana's third goal, while Michelle Badilla-Gesek rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 65th minute.
"We played a pretty good first half," Tobias said. "We had some pretty good chances to score. But when we give up a goal or get behind, we don't do a good job of making on field adjustments."
Natalie Kehl (Colbert, Wash.) had four shots for WSU, while Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash,) and Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind.) each added two for the Cougars, who fell to 1-4-1 all-time versus Montana.
For the first time in her career, sophomore keeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) did not play the full 90 minutes. She was lifted in the 72nd minute for redshirt freshman Naomi Allen (Tacoma, Wash.), who allowed no goals and made one save in 18 minutes in her collegiate debut.
Before coming out of the game, Jorgensen made four saves to lift her career total to 160, just six behind No. 2 Jessica Glazer's 166. WSU's all-time saves leader is Natalie McDowell, who had 291 saves from 1990-93.
WSU returns to Pullman to host Easten Washington Friday at 3:00 p.m. The Cougs' brief two-game homestand concludes next Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. match with Gonzaga.
