Arizona State's Late Outburst Captures Game

Oct. 31, 1999

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State did a good job of holding the Arizona State offense, and Pac-10 leading scorer Stacey Tullock, for most of the game on Sunday. But it was the final 12 minutes of the game that the Sun Devils took control, beating the Cougars 4-1 on Senior Day.

"We thought we did a good job on her for about 50, 60 minutes," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias about defending Tullock. "She's a very good player. She scored two goals today and I didn't think she was at her best. I think that says a lot about her."

With the score tied 1-1 at the half, a Washington State (7-10, 1-5) player fouled an Arizona State (11-6, 3-4) player just a few feet outside the 18-yard box. Tullock hovered over the ball and nailed the free kick around the wall and past a diving Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) into the left side of the net for a 2-1 lead in the 79th minute.

Less than three minutes later, the Cougars surrendered a penalty kick to the Sun Devils, which Tullock scored on to boost ASU's lead to 3-1.

Arizona State closed out the scoring in the 84th minute off a corner kick. Holly Cohen's corner kick was played across the mouth of the goal from Karine Inoue to Jill Rivard. Rivard tapped the ball into the net for the final margin.

"The three goals they scored in the second half were off a free kick, a penalty kick and a corner kick," Tobias said. "All dead ball situations. We shouldn't be giving up three goals of that type."

Washington State's lone goal came off the foot of Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.), when the junior forward hit a one-time volley into the net in the 32nd minute. The ball came on a corner kick that Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) bent towards the goal. ASU goalie Erin Reinke attempted to punch the ball over the goal, but the ball bounced off the cross bar to DeWitt.

Cohen scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute for Arizona State.

WSU played well in the first half creating scoring chances, but it couldn't capitalize on a majority of them.

"The key is getting those quality chances," Tobias said. "I thought it was good that we created a lot of good chances. We didn't put any of them away, but we created them."

Washington State honored its three seniors (Kristin Mak, Meagin Donovan and Christina Pallan) during pre-game introductions as they played their final match at Cougar Soccer Field on Sunday.

Midfielder Natalie Kehl (Spokane, Wash.) suffered a knee injury against ASU and left the game early in the first half. She will be re-evaluated on Monday,

The Cougars will make their final road trip of the season, closing out their Pac-10 schedule at California on Friday and at No. 10 Stanford on Sunday.
