Cougars Finish Husky Nike Invitational With Shutout Win

Oct. 3, 1999

SEATTLE -After struggling offensively against Portland Friday, Washington State's women's soccer team found its niche reeling off 25 shots en route to a 2-0 shutout against UC Irvine.

With leading scorer Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash) missing her second consecutive game with a groin injury, the Cougars looked to an unlikely source for the first goal.

Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.), who had started all nine games at sweeper, came off the bench and gave the Cougars a 1-0 in the 65th minute when she ricocheted a shot off a defender and into the net. Christina Pallan (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Natalie Kehl (Colbert, Wash.) were credited with assists on Childs' first-career goal in 29 matches.

"It was a little ironic," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "At half time we told her to go in behind the forwards and score her first college goal and she did."

The final goal of the game came in the 78th minute off the foot of Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.). Defender Liz Duncan (Richland, Wash.) played the ball out of the back to Kehl, who one-touched the ball to Stroh 10 yards away from the goal for the shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season, giving her 11 for her career to break Jessica Glazer's record of 10. Jorgensen was forced to make only four saves.

"The chances that they had were not challenging at all," said Tobias. "Lindsey didn't have much to do other than grabbing a few crosses."

The Cougs finished their non-conference schedule at 6-4-0. Washington State will open up Pac-10 play on Sunday at noon as it travels back to Husky Soccer Field to take on Washington.
