Slumbering Cougars Fall to Oregon State

Oct. 24, 1999

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Cougar women's soccer team came out sluggish and by the time they appeared ready to play, they were down 3-1 with only 20 minutes remaining.

It was the first 70 minutes that forced Washington State (6-9-0, 0-5-0) to play catch-up against Oregon State. The Beavers (8-7-1, 1-4-0) got on the board early, scoring in the 17th minute off the foot of BreeAnna Jolin. WSU midfielder Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.) headed a corner kick out to the top of the 18-yard box, where Jolin collected the header and deposited the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougs eventually tied the game early in the second half when Brianne Carmody (Yakima, Wash.) was dragged down in the box for a penalty kick. Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) calmly nailed the shot in the lower-right corner.

But the game wouldn't stay tied for long as the Beavers shocked WSU with two quick goals.

At the 65-minute mark, Leila Kaady crossed a free kick into the box where Beth Thomason flicked the ball to Anne Marie Fallow at the back post for the tip-goal.

Less than two minutes later, Dante Lipfert received a wall pass from Thomason and belted a shot into the goal for a 3-1 Oregon State lead.

Washington State mounted a furious comeback, beginning with Meagin Donovan's (Noblesville, Ind.) header goal off a cross from Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) in the 77th minute.

A few minutes later, DeWitt hit a banana shot over Beaver goalie Elizabeth Pease and off the post, but the ball was cleared away before the Cougars could net the equalizer.

"We didn't play with much urgency until we were down," said a disappointed WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "We were down 3-1 and I thought we did well (coming back). It's tougher to play under those conditions. You have to play for 90 minutes and that hasn't happened. We had a good week of training."

Washington State will face the Arizona schools this weekend, as the Cougars prepare for their final home contests of the Pac-10 season. Arizona will face WSU at 2 p.m. on Friday, while Arizona State and the Cougs will square off on Sunday a 1 p.m.
