PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State fell just a few inches short of beating Oregon only to lose the soccer match early in overtime 2-1.
With the score tied and less than two minutes remaining in regulation time, Washington State set up for a corner kick. The corner kick ricocheted off a player and on to the head of Meagin Donovan (Noblesville, Ind) who headed the ball toward the empty net. Oregon's Chalise Baysa, who was covering the far post on the play, headed the ball off the line, keeping the Ducks (6-8-0, 2-2-0) chances alive.
In overtime, the Cougs (6-8-0, 0-4-0) had the ball in Oregon's 18-yard box, but couldn't trigger a shot, resulting in a quick transition out of the 18 and into Cougar territory.
Following a foul on WSU, Oregon's Carrie McLanahan nailed a cross from near the midfield stripe into the Cougars 18-yard box. WSU goalie Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) came out to challenge the ball as it came to the feet of Oregon's Julie McLellan. McLellan hit a ball that appeared to be headed toward the back post, when Liz Duncan (Richland, Wash.) attempt to clear the ball went into goal at the 91:59 mark in the first overtime.
"It was a ball that Lindsey decided to make a play on," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "The girl just got a foot on the ball and our player was in position to knock it away and she didn't. We didn't get the result that we were hoping for."
Washington State opened the scoring in the first half when Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) had a one-on-one with Oregon goalie Amanda Fox. Fox stopped the shot, but the ball bounced back to Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.), who floated a shot over the defense from 30-yards out in the 27th minute. Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Oregon tied the game in the 40th minute after Adrienne Rizzo (San Jose, Calif.) dragged down an Oregon player in the box for a penalty kick. Sierra Marsh shot the ball in the lower-left corner of the goal to knot the score.
"That was unfortunate," Tobias said. "They scored the tying goal with about five minutes remaining in the half. That killed our momentum. We wanted to go into the half up 1-0."
Oregon dominated the first 20 minutes of the first half, taking six corner kicks, while WSU didn't take one. Oregon finished the game with 10 corner kicks.
Washington State, which has a four-game losing streak, will look to end the streak and pick up its first Pac-10 win on the year against Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
