Tenth-ranked USC Stifles Washington State Attack

Oct. 17, 1999

LOS ANGELES - USC launched 21 shots at Washington State, scoring two goals in each half as the Women of Troy shut out the Cougars 4-0 in Pac-10 play.

USC (11-3, 4-0) got on the board in the 16th minute when a Washington State (6-7, 0-3) pass was intercepted in Cougs' defensive half of the field. Kaylee Whitfield was the beneficiary, scoring after a steal and passes from Isabelle Harvey and Kim Clark.

With 11 minutes remaining in the first half, USC's Harvey cleared a ball past the WSU defense. When WSU goalie Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) came out, she couldn't find the handle and Jackie Fodor was there to put the ball in the net.

"They had most of the run of the play in the first half, but they didn't have many scoring chances," said WSU head coach Dan Tobias. "We had problems getting forward in the first half."

In the second half, Tobias brought in a second forward, Brianne Carmody (Yakima, Wash.), to help take the pressure off Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.). The strategy helped as the Cougars, who only took one shot in the first half, managed to get off five shots, including a one-on-one, which USC goalie Shaelyn Fernandes stopped.

"They are real efficient at what they do," Tobias said. "I thought USC's midfielders did a good job of controlling the ball. They got the ball to their flank players who are really fast and they made good crosses. They also did a good job closing down the passing lanes and that made it tough to get the ball to Deka."

Ali Fennell (56th minute) and Whitfield (84th minute) capped the scoring for USC. The shut out, USC's eight of the season, ties a school record.

Harvey, who had two assists for the Women of Troy, became the first player in school history to top the 100-point plateau.

Washington State will return to the Palouse for two Pac-10 games this weekend. Oregon comes to Cougar Soccer Field on Friday for a 2 p.m. game, while Oregon State faces the Cougs on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Cougs will look to extend their five-game unbeaten streak at home. WSU is 4-0 at home this year, with the fifth win coming against Washington to end last season.
