Wayne Foster arrived on the Pullman campus in the early 1960s from South Kitsap where he had concluded an incredible prep career. He pole vaulted over 11 feet, ran a 10.2 100-yard dash, finished second in state in the discus, averaged a double-double on the basketball court, and that was off the football field. Football is where he made his name. One of WSU’s great defensive tackles, Foster, who did spend two years throwing discus at WSU, started on both the offensive and defensive lines as a sophomore and junior. Foster’s teammates knew he was special, and in his senior season, the nation took notice. A leader on the Cardiac Kids team that went 7-3, he earned first-team All-America honors by the Football Writers of America, along with All-West Coast and All-Pacific Coast Conference First-Team accolades. He played in the East-West Shrine Game and Hula Bowl following his senior year before being drafted by the Oakland Raiders. He chose to play three seasons in the Canadian Football League before injuries cut his career short. In 1995 Foster was named to the Spokesman-Review’s All-Century team for WSU football and in 2007 his athletic career came full circle as he was inducted into the Kitsap Hall of Fame.
