W. B. “Red” Reese played basketball for the Cougars from 1921-25 under Fred Bohler and served as team captain in 1925. Throughout the Northwest, Reese is best known for his coaching success, particularly at Eastern Washington from 1930-1964. His EWU football teams won six conference titles and 72.5 percent of their games, the best in the school's history. Reese’s track teams won 23 conference titles and had a string of 43 straight dual wins. It was his basketball teams, however, that most remember. They won 12 conference titles and at one point won 27 straight contests. He won his 500th game in 1960. Reese helped organize the NAIA and served as president in 1952-53. In 1980, the EWU basketball arena was named “Reese Court.”
