When Micaela Castain arrived at Washington State, she wanted to be part of a program that put Cougar Soccer on the map. Four years, 55 wins and three NCAA Tournament appearances later, Castain accomplished that goal, along with many more. After four seasons in Pullman (2010-13), she graduated from WSU as one of the most prolific scorers in Cougar soccer history. During her time on the Palouse, Castain suited up 74 times in the Crimson and Gray, starting 71 total matches. She finished her career third in school history with 33 goals and 80 points. The California native added 14 assists to her scoring tally, sixth in program history. After leading the team in scoring as a junior in which she earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors and All-Region honors, Castain left no doubt who the conference’s top player was as a senior. The Castro Valley, Calif. native scored 11 goals and dished 11 assists for a Pac-12 leading 33 points that season, becoming the only player in Cougar soccer history to be named conference MVP, earning Pac-12 Player of the Year honors in 2013, along with First-Team All-Pacific Region honors. During the historic 2013 season, Castain led the Cougars to a runner-up finish in the Pac-12, the best finish in the Pac-10/12 era for the program, which included a win over No. 6 Stanford in Pullman on Senior Day, and a third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In addition to her All-Pac-12 First Team selection, Castain’s illustrious college career was concluded in historic fashion, becoming WSU’s first soccer All-American as she earned Madness Soccer First Team and National Soccer Coaches Association of American Second Team All-America honors. Castain received one final salute before graduating as she was named WSU’s Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal recipient, awarded to each school’s outstanding senior student-athlete.
