In 1977 the Washington state men’s indoor track and field team sent seven members to the NCAA indoor meet in Detroit, Mich., and came away its first national title. Having placed in the top five the previous two years, the 1977 squad saw all seven participants score points and each one was needed. At the end of the meet the Cougars finished with 25.5 points, just ahead of runner-up Wisconsin, which accumulated 25 points. Henry Rono led the way as the distance great won the two-mile and finished third in the one mile. Triple jumper Ian Campbell won his event while Samson Kimombwa, who is also being inducted tonight for his individual accomplishments, was second in the three-mile run. Joshua Kimeto was third in the two-mile run and Paul Buxton finished fifth in the 35-pouind weight throw.
