Jason Hanson is one of the most decorated Washington State football student-athletes of all-time. A kicker and punter for the Cougars, he was a freshman All-American. As a sophomore in 1989, Hanson became WSU’s first unanimous first team All-American, named to eight teams. He booted five field goals of 50 yards or longer, including a then-school record 58-yarder. He was an All-Pac-10 Conference selection as kicker and punter during his junior campaign. He averaged 45.5 yards per punt to rank third nationally and earn All-America status. As a senior, Hanson drilled a 62-yard field goal to break his own school record and set an NCAA Division I standard for kick without the use of a tee. He was a first team All-American as a kicker and a punter while being named a National Scholar-Athlete and receiving the NCAA Fall Top Six Award. Hanson was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl. He set 15 school records in his career. His 39 field goals of 40 yards or longer and 20 of 50 yards or longer both broke NCAA records. A three-time All-Pac-10 Academic honoree and three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, Hanson was a second round pick in the 1992 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. Spending 20-plus seasons with the Lions, Hanson became the first player in NFL history to make 50 field goals of 50 yards or more. He set a league record by making 24-straight field goals of 40 yards or more. An All-Pro, Hanson was the sixth player in NFL history to score 2,000 points and the first to do with one team.
