Hugh Campbell, “The Phantom of the Palouse,” ranks as the greatest all-around pass receiver in Cougar gridiron history according to many. His numbers certainly merit the praise. As a sophomore in 1960, he set a single-game record with 11 receptions. He finished the season with then-school records for catches (67) and receiving touchdowns (10). During his three-year career that ended in 1962, Campbell set Washington State records with 177 receptions, 2,459 receiving yards and 22 receiving touchdowns. He went on to spend 33 seasons as a player, coach, general manager, president and CEO in the Canadian Football League. Campbell played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and coached the Edmonton Eskimos to five-straight Grey Cup (CFL championship) victories. He is a member of the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame, the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame, the Whitworth Hall of Fame, the Edmonton Eskimos’ Wall of Honour and the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Plaza of Honour.
