George Reed was an outstanding fullback on Cougar football teams of 1959, 1961 and 1962. Following a serious leg injury at start of 1960 season which threatened to end career, Reed made a great comeback in 1961 as he rushed for 489 yards and eight touchdowns, both team bests. His senior season he was named captain and again led the team in rushing and scoring, gaining 503 yards and posting nine touchdowns. He capped the season by receiving the Fred Bohler Award for inspiration and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine and Hula Bowl games. Reed went on to play 13 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of Canadian Professional Football League, being named the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 1965 and in 1976 was the inaugural winner of the Tom Pate Memorial Trophy for playing ability and community service. A nine-time CFL all-star, he concluded his career holding the CFL record for yards gained (16,166), rushing touchdowns (134) and total touchdowns (137). A member of the 1966 Grey Cup champions, Reed was voted one of the CFL's Top 50 players (#2) of the league's modern era and is a member of the CFL and State of Washington Sports Halls of Fame.
