To say Dick Farman’s football career at Washington State had a bizarre start might be an understatement, but to say he went on to a great football career collegiately and professionally is in no way an understatement. Farman played his first collegiate game for the Crimson and Gray after sneaking on the team train to Los Angeles and dressing for the WSC-USC game in 1936. Not authorized to make the California trip, Farman showed up, dressed, played well and earned a spot for the rest of the season on coach Babe Hollingbery's team. Truly an “iron man” for the Cougars, Farman played guard 589 of a possible 600 minutes during the 1938 season. A co-captain as a senior, he completed his collegiate career by playing in the East-West Shrine Game. A year later, he was drafted by the NFL’s Washington State Redskins. A three-time All-Pro, Farman played on three divisional title teams and was member of the Redskins’ 1942 championship squad. During the middle of the 1945 season, he responded to WSC Athletic Director Dr. Fred Bohler’s plea to help coach the line. The Cougars went 4-0-1 with Farman on staff.
