Head Coach Isaac “Ike” Deeter led a group of Washington natives (Paul Waller of Carbondale, Ill. being the only member of the team not from the state of Washington) to its fourth Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Boxing title in six years (five points over second-place Idaho). Waller (139 lbs.) and Ed McKinnon (159) each captured PCI individual championships en route to the National Intercollegiate Boxing Tournament in Sacramento, Calif. WSC sent four boxers to the national championships, Waller, McKinnon, Roy ‘Pooch’ Petragallo (119) and Robert Bates (135), as all four reached the finals. McKinnon and Petragallo each won the championship in their respective weight classes, giving the Cougars 25 points, 12 ahead of second-place Duke, for Washington State’s first National Championship in any sport.
