Ed Haskins completed his second season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Washington State University in 2018-19, after joining Ernie Kent’s staff for the 2017-18 season.
Haskins came to Washington State from Seattle’s Garfield High School where he served as the boys’ basketball for nine years, and set the record for highest winning percentage (.862) of all boys' basketball coaches at GHS with a 213-34 career mark. In addition to his head coaching duties at Garfield HS, Haskins also served as the athletic director and activities coordinator from 2011-17. Prior to that, Haskins was first a special education instructional assistant, then a special education instructor at GHS from 2009-14.
A perennial basketball powerhouse in the state of Washington, Garfield High School was ranked in the Associated Press’s top-10 in the state all nine seasons under Haskins. The Bulldogs were ranked as high as 25th nationally by USA Today and 18th by MaxPreps in 2013-14, as they went on to win the 2014 4A State Championship. The following year, Haskins led GHS to the 3A State Championship. He was named the 2016 Tacoma News Tribune Coach of the Year, the 2015 Seattle Metro League Coach of the Year, and the 2009 and 2012 KingCo Conference Coach of the Year.
Haskins joined Garfield after serving as the head boys’ junior varsity basketball coach and assistant coach for the varsity team at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle for nine years. RBHS won the 3A Boys' State Championship three times during Haskins' tenure (2002, 2003, 2008). During his time at RBHS, he also coached the USA Junior National Team in the Nike Global Challenge in 2007
Haskins’ brother, the late Aaron Haskins, played basketball for four years at Washington State (1980-83), where he helped lead the team to two NCAA Tournaments. The success of his brother inspired the younger Haskins to "be a part of Washington State basketball."
Haskins has coached and helped coach prestigious players both currently and formerly playing in the NBA, including Tony Wroten, Isaiah Thomas, Spencer Hawes, Lodrick Stewart, Nate Robinson, Will Conroy and Jamal Crawford; as well as former WSU student-athletes Mike Ladd and Reggie Moore, both of whom are RBHS graduates.
Haskins received a degree in interdisciplinary studies from Eastern Washington University in 2012. He is married to Carla, and has three children, Nacia (24), Julian (22) and Quincy (7).
