SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 4, 2026) – Freshman Trevor Smith delivered the go-ahead pinch-hit RBI-single in the ninth inning as Washington State clinched the series with a 6-3 victory over San Jose State Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at three, Max Hartman drove a two-out triple off the right field wall before Smith came off the bench and pulled an 0-1 pitch through the right side to score Hartman and give the Cougars a 4-3 lead. Two batters later Alexandre Giguere rocketed a two-run single to left field for a 6-3 advantage before Scott Rienguette closed things out in the bottom of the ninth.
WSU dropped Thursday's opener before evening the series with a 5-3 victory Friday. The Cougars improved to 14-16 overall and 7-5 in Mountain West play while San Jose State dropped to 13-18 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Cougar starting pitcher Luke Meyers worked six innings, struck out four and allowed just two first-inning runs before closing his afternoon with five straight scoreless frames. Rienguette recorded the final out of the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth to earn the win.
