Griffin Smith Fires Complete Game, Myers Delivers Late to beat UNLV

PULLMAN, Wash. (May 10, 2025) – Griffin Smith fired a complete gamed and Griffin Myers delivered the go-ahead RBI-single in the eighth inning as Washington State evened the series with UNLV after a 5-4 victory in front for 1,232 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday evening.

Smith scattered six hits, struck out three and did not issue a walk to record WSU's first nine-inning complete game since Grant Taylor's 17-strikeout shutout at Washington last season. Smith retired 11 at one point before UNLV evened the game with two outs in the seventh. Myers delivered a two-out RBI-single through the right side to score pinch-runner Cole Watterson from second before Smith retired the Rebels in order in the ninth.

Logan Johnstone collected three hits including the go-ahead three-run home run in the third inning, his team-leading nine long of the season. Will Cresswell and Myers each drove in a run.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Johnstone lined a two-out single the other way to left field, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on Cresswell's rocket RBI-single off the right field wall. UNLV evened things up with a two-out solo homer to left field in the second inning and took the lead with a two-run home run in the third.

In the bottom of the third, Hartman bounced a single up the middle and Gavin Roy was hit by a pitch before Johnstone crushed a 2-1 pitch long over the right field fence for a 4-3 Cougar lead.
Smith settled in and retired 11 straight UNLV hitters followed the third-inning home run, striking out three along the way.

In the seventh, UNLV broke up the streak with a leadoff double to centerfield and evened things up with a high-chopping double over the third baseman to score the runner from third. WSU put runners on first and second with two outs in their half of the seventh but the Rebel bullpen ended the threat with a groundout to second.

In the eighth, Ollie Obenour singled to right field with one out and pinch-runner Cole Watterson moved to second on a groundout before Myers pulled a 1-0 pitch through the right side to score Watterson for the lead.
