WSU RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA
The Washington State women's soccer team returns to California, one week removed from a shutout draw at California, to face UC San Diego, Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. at Triton Soccer Stadium in San Diego. The Cougars hosted the Tritons last September in Pullman for the programs' first all-time meeting. WSU and UCSD played to a 1-1 draw with an opening goal from the Tritons before a first-half equalizer by WSU. Todd Shulenberger will reach 200 career matches coached at Thursday's contest.
THE COUGARS AND THE TRITONS
In last season's inaugural meeting, the Cougs put 25 shots up against UCSD, September 8, 2024. Wazzu took nine corner kicks to the Tritons' two and earned the second draw in a three-match unbeaten streak before falling at No. 13 Pepperdine.
LAST TIME ON THE PITCH
WSU played to a scoreless draw with the California Golden Bears last Thursday afternoon in Berkeley. WSU goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald made a career-high 11 saves as the Cougars earned their first shutout of the season. The California senior delivered the most single-match saves by a Cougar goalkeeper since April 16, 2021, earning her WCC Defensive Player of the Week.
KEARA EARNS WCC WEEKLY HONORS
Senior goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week, September 8, for her shutout performance at Cal last week. This week's honor marked Fitzgerald's second-career weekly honor, after earning the Big West Defensive Player of the Week in 2023 at UC San Diego.
ABOUT THE TRITONS
The Tritons are a familiar opponent for Fitzgerald, who played three seasons at UCSD. UC San Diego is led by seventh-year head coach Kristin Jones, a 2004 graduate of the Triton soccer program and long-time staff member. UCSD freshman Ava Tibor has caught the Big West's attention with four goals and two conference weekly honors.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Cougs conclude the weekend in southern California with a visit to UC Irvine, Sunday, September 14. WSU and UCI are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. at Anteater Stadium and on ESPN+. WSU hosted the Anteaters last year in Pullman, drawing them 1-1 in September. Jenna Studer scored the Cougs' goal against Irvine.
IF THE GLOVE FITZ
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald earned the starting nod in the 2025 season opener, returning to the pitch for the first time since October 2023 and the first time in a WSU uniform. Fitzgerald made six saves, the most by a Cougar keeper since Nadia Cooper made six saves against LMU last October, and has held down the starting job since. Fitzgerald tallied an assist in the Cougars' draw with No. 13 Georgia, August 31, delivering her second-career assist and the first by a Cougar goalkeeper since Nadia Cooper notched an assist against Colorado in Boulder in 2021. At California, September 4, the senior tallied a career-high 11 saves and earned WCC Defensive Player of the Week.
STUDER EARNS ALL-WCC PRESEASON
Returning sixth-year senior Jenna Studer was named to the All-WCC preseason team. The California native will feature in the Cougars' backline after delivering a pair of goals and an assist last season, playing nearly every minute of the 2024 campaign.
2025 ROSTER RELOAD
The Cougars welcomed 20 new faces, including six transfers and 14 freshmen. WSU retained 10 returnees, including four returning starters, two additional letterwinners, and four redshirts. In the season opener against Utah State, 11 Cougs made their WSU debuts, including seven in the starting lineup. Keara Fitzgerald, Ava Ghoreishi, Kiera Mitchell, Audrey Shackelford, Becca Skinner, Isabelle Wright, and Jordyn Young all made their first career starts at WSU. In the Cougars' first road game of the season Elliotte Kortus made her first career start as a Coug, alongside grad transfer Abigail Siddall, starting up top for her first WSU appearance and start.
OH CAPTAINS, MY CAPTAINS
WSU's senior trio of Maggie Mace, Peyton Price, and Jenna Studer were selected by teammates and staff as the 2025 team captains.
