PULLMAN, Wash. (April 4, 2025) – Griffin Smith worked seven innings and eight hitters collected hits in a 10-2 series-opening victory over San Jose State in front of 1,152 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday afternoon.
Washington State received multiple-hit games from Ollie Obenour, Logan Johnstone, Ricco Longo and Kyler Northrop while Gavin Roy drove in three runs and seven players scored a run. Smith matched a season-high with seven innings, scatted just three hits, struck out one and retired 11-straight at one point to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Cougars used a two-out two-run single from Roy in the first and scored in four straight innings beginning with a four-run third.

WSU loaded the bases with two outs in the first before Roy lined a two-out single back up the middle to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Washington State answered the Spartans second-inning solo homer with four runs in the third. The Cougars used three hits, two hit-by-pitch and a walk to push the lead to 6-1 with a sacrifice fly by Roy, an RBI-single from Ricco Longo and a two-run infield single from Northrop who beat the pitcher to the first bag on the play.
Smith retired 11 straight after a third-inning infield single highlighted by a five-pitch fifth inning. SJSU led off the seventh with ground ball single up the middle but Smith retired the next three hitters to preserve the big lead.
Hartman drove in a run with an opposite field double to left field in the fifth and Thiele punched a two-out two-run single through the right side to push the lead to 10-1.
