STANFORD, Calif. (November 7, 2024) – Washington State women's basketball battled a tough Stanford team on the road Thursday night, falling 94-65.
The Cougars (1-1, 0-0 WCC) shot 44.6 percent from the field and went a 50-percent 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.
Eleonora Villa was the team's top scorer with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists and a block.
Tara Wallack added 13 points on the night, to go with four boards, a block and a steal.
Alex Covill recorded three blocks, two rebounds and six points, and
Marta Alsina had a steal, six points and four rebounds.
After Stanford jumped ahead early, the Cougs worked back with buckets from
Eleonora Villa and Covill to make it a one-point game, 11-10 midway through the first. Stanford continued to hold a lead, but a three from
Eleonora Villa and an
Astera Tuhina jumper kept the Stanford lead to 21-15 at the end of the first.
A jumper from
Charlotte Abraham to open the second helped WSU back to within a possession 21-19. As the quarter went on, makes from Alsina and Wallack made it a 29-23 game with 5:12 to go in the first half, but Stanford extended their lead from there. After a Wallack triple to end the first half, the Cougs trailed 42-31 at the break.
WSU went to work out to start the third, as shots from
Eleonora Villa brought it back to a 10-point game, and then a put-back layin from Wallack made it 54-46. Stanford went on to outscore the Cougs 15-2 the rest of the quarter, though, as the game entered the fourth at 69-48.
In the final quarter, Abraham and
Alice Dart connected on threes and
Jean Chiu, Alsina and
Candace Kpetikou all had buckets as Stanford went on to win 94-65.
