Campbell’s Late Equalizer Keeps Cougs Unbeaten at Home

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Cougar soccer team (5-4-5) tied the Portland Pilots, 1-1, Saturday night at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. WSU true freshman Kendall Campbell scored the equalizer with less than five minutes to play in the match to keep the Cougars unbeaten at home and steal a point away from the Pilots.

Campbell's goal marked her team-best third of the season, delivering a world-class strike with just over 84 minutes on the clock. The California freshman ran on to an overhead ball from Rajanah Reed, kneeing the ball into the box before striking with the outside of her right foot on the half-volley, curling the ball into the upper far post and past the outstretched Pilots' goalkeeper.

The Cougars controlled the flow of the game throughout, nearly finding the opening goal 10 minutes into the contest when senior Reese Tappan headed home a free kick. However, the offside flag went up moments later and the match remained scoreless.

In the 34th minute, WSU senior goalkeeper Nadia Cooper looked to clear a back pass from her defense, with Portland's Jillian McBride applying pressure. Cooper, who got the kick off, slammed the punt off of McBride's head, where it ricocheted into the WSU net. The Pilots took the lead at the break, despite it being their only "shot" on target.

Returning from the locker room, the Cougars continued to control the midfield, playing through the wide channels and into the attacking third. With just over 10 minutes to play, sophomore Megan Santa Cruz had two shot attempts from a corner kick, slamming the second shot on target and into the arms of Portland's Bre Norris.

The Cougar breakthrough came when Lindsey Turner won a 50-50 ball that bounced toward Rajanah Reed. Reed struck the ball first-time on the full volley, playing Campbell over the top and into the Pilot's box. Campbell's finish marked the latest WSU goal of the season and Reed's first assist of the season and third of her career.

WSU limited the Pilots to just six total shots, and two attempts on frame. The Cougars had nine shots with four attempts on target. Nadia Cooper made one save in the match and surpassed 6,000 career minutes in goal for the Cougars, becoming just the fourth WSU goalkeeper to eclipse the milestone.

The Cougars will have a full week off before returning to WCC action, Saturday, Oct. 19 in Spokane, Wash. at the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Kickoff from Luger Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT with coverage on ESPN+.
