Cougs cruise past UW, sweep Pac-12 opener in Bohler Gym

Magda Jehlarova became the program's all-time leader in block assists, now with 529 in her career and counting, as the Cougars swept UW Thursday night.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Julia Norville had a match-high three service aces while Iman Isanovic (13k) and Pia Timmer (10k) led Washington State volleyball (11-1, 1-0 Pac-12) offensively in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) win over Apple Cup rival Washington (9-3, 0-1 Pac-12) Thursday night.  Washington State hit .385 as a team while UW suffered from 15 attack errors, three set errors, and nine serving errors in front of another rowdy Bohler Gym crowd, taking just 1 hour and 25 minutes to finish off a second consecutive home sweep over the Huskies.

The Cougs got off to a fast start against their in-state rivals Thursday night as they raced out to a 9-2 lead to start the match. Washington State never trailed in the first and led by double digits late into the opening set. Pia Timmer finished with a first-set stat line of 4k-1e-8a for a .375 hitting percentage while Magda Jehlarova also added four kills on only seven swings (.571) to begin the match.

Washington State again jumped out in front in the second set, this time to the tune of another quick 8-2 run.  Isanovic had a team-leading five kills in the second set while Magda Jehlarova and Argentina Ung each had a pair of block assists together in the set.  Karly Basham had five of her team-high 13 digs for the match during the second set as Washington again could not get past the WSU defense and only hit .188 with seven attack errors in the second.

Ung finished the match with 35 assists and three more blocks while Timmer added eight digs to fall only two shy of her second double double this season.

Despite the third set seeing a five total ties, a high for the match, Washington was held to only .067 hitting (8-6-30) as the Cougs went 11-of-15 (73 percent) on sideout points, comfortably closing the sweep out with a 9-4 run down the stretch.

Washington State has now won six consecutive matches overall on its home court against its in-state rival, backing up last season's sweep in the conference finale with a straight-sets win to open its 2023 Pac-12 schedule.
