Cougs finish off perfect start to home stand, Jehlarova sets career blocking record

PULLMAN, Wash. — Fifth-year senior Magda Jehlárová became the WSU all-time leader in career blocks (616) after tallying nine kills and nine total blocks with a .529 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win for Washington State volleyball (4-1) over Drake (1-4) Friday night in Bohler Gym.

Karly Basham had a season-high 21 kills, falling just two shy of her career high as she and the Cougar defense held Drake to an attack percentage of just .177 and 25 attacking errors. With a new section of rowdy students closer to serving opponents, the Bulldogs finished with 10 errors at the service line.

Iman Isanovic helped lead the way offensively early for the Cougars, putting up a team-leaading five kills on nine attacks in the opening set with zero errors. She finished the night with a team-leading 16 kills at a .333 clip while also adding 11 digs for her first double-double as a Coug. Argentina Ung had two kills and 33 assists to along with eight digs and four blocks on the night while Katy Ryan finished with nine kills one 29 attacks.

The Cougars jumped out to a two-set lead behind a dominant 25-16 first set in which they tallied four aces and looked like making another run at an ace record. Isanovic continued to pour on the pressure offensively in the second set, finishing with six kills on 16 attacks. The Cougs closed out the second set on a 3-0 run, but trailed start to finish in the third set as Drake climbed back into the contest.

Jehlarova put her foot on the gas with 10 attacks and four kills in the fourth set, finishing off the Bulldogs with blocks on two of the final four WSU points down the stretch including her record-setting moment falling in the dying stages of the four-set win.

Washington State will close out its first of two home tournaments on Saturday, taking on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane beginning at 6 p.m. PST.
