At 6'1, 191 pounds with a ridiculous vertical, new transfer wide receiver
Josh Kelly has showcased a knack for the big play over his college career. Over the last four years at Fresno State, a covid-19-shortened 2020 season and injuries have limited the amount of time Kelly has been on the field, but when he has, he's produced.
After redshirting the 2019 year and Covid-19 affected the 2020 season, 2021 was Kelly's first year that he played in a full slate of games and the results followed immediately. In 13 games, including nine starts, Kelly hauled in 52 catches with 778 yards and three touchdowns. With over 15 yards averaged per catch, every time the ball hit Kelly's hands something big was bound to happen.
With Kelly now in the Pac-12, he will get a great chance to showcase his big play ability against the best defenses in the country. We sat down with Kelly to talk about spring ball, his transfer from Fresno State, the upcoming season and much more. Here is what Kelly had to say…..
How was spring ball? Was it easy to get acclimated?
Spring ball was really good, no complaints. I was really trying to get the playbook down, trying to understand what it is we really want to do. It was good though, I'm excited to be here.
You entered the transfer portal after last season. What was that whole process like for you?
It was a lot for sure. I talked to a couple Big-12 schools, a couple Mountain West Conference schools, along with WSU. I wanted to go somewhere that really felt like home and after taking my visit here, it really felt like the place to be, and the decision was then made.
What other schools did you talk to? What set WSU apart?
I talked to Kansas, Colorado state, San Diego State, and then had a couple of mentions with other schools. Coming here felt more like a family vibe than any other place I visited, and I'm big on family, so that was a huge reason for my decision to come here.
The team lost their top four receivers from last year's team, and rightfully hit the transfer portal for talent at the position. With a new group of receivers coming in, how do you plan to establish your place on the team?
I'm very excited to see it all come together. We've all talked already about working to be the best group in the country. We try to instill the mindset in practice every day so that come gameday it's second nature. I love the group of guys I'm around right now, and we plan to make some serious noise this season.
What is something Coug fans should know about you, on and off the field?
On the field, I'm a very competitive person. Coug fans will see somebody who gives their all on every play. I'm very passionate about the game, and sometimes a little emotional, though in a good way. Off the field, I'm a very laid back dude, I spend most of my time with friends and family. I want to continue to build those relationships here too.
Are there any receivers that you try to look after, emulate your game after?
Absolutely, the heavy hitters in the game I look up to are Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams. The person I study the most though is probably Dez Bryant. Dez was a dog, man. We got the type of "go get the ball" mentality and I've always looked up to him.
What is some of the music you like to listen to before the game?
You got the obvious ones like lil baby. Before the game though I like to be laid back, relaxed, not too hyped up. I'll put on a little classical music, maybe some r&b. I don't ever have a problem hopping on aux, I know what music to get the team ready before the game.
Expectations for the team this season? How far can this team go?
I don't see any reason why we can't be in the conference championship, possibly the Rose Bowl/CFP. Ever since I've gotten here that's what we've been preaching. We have the talent to do so, and if we come together, it's going to be a special season.
Good luck on the season Josh! Go Cougs!
