Magda Jehlárová, Iman Isanovic and Katy Ryan each received CSC Academic All-District honors
PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State volleyball had three student-athletes recognized as CSC Academic All-District honorees as announced by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Tuesday. Fifth-year seniors Magda Jehlářová and Iman Isanovic, as well as junior opposite hitter, Katy Ryan, were named to this year's academic all-district team for having earned a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average while also appearing in at least 90 percent of contests this season.
The trio will now appear on Division I women's volleyball Academic All-America ballot to be voted on this week by the nation's college sports communicators.
Jehlářová became the NCAA leader in career blocks (769), while also setting a Washington State single-season record for hitting percentage (.424) in her final season at WSU. A master's student in Management, Jehlářová was the 2022 Pac-12 Women's Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year, and leaves Washington State as the program's career leader in matches played (147), hitting percentage (.384), and block assists (624). The only five-time first-team all-conference selection in Pac-12 history, Jehlářová was the second overall pick in Monday's Professional Volleyball Federation (PVF) inaugural collegiate player draft. The native of Prerov, Czech Republic, is now a three-time Academic All-District selection having earned her first-career Academic All-America honors in 2022.
Fifth-year graduate transfer from Arizona State, Iman Isanovic, made an instant impact on the court in her lone season on the Palouse, averaging 3.22 kills/set with a career-high .249 hitting percentage. A graduate student in Political Science, Isanovic was recognized as a WSU Student Athlete of the Month in September, a month that also saw the Cougars go 11-0 while winning streak with top-25 wins over BYU, Baylor, and Texas. In her first-career postseason run, Isanovic averaged 3.50 kills/set and 1.60 digs/set, while hitting .239. She finished the Cougars' opening-round win over Grand Canyon, her NCAA Tournament debut, with 16 kills and a .375 hitting percentage to help lift WSU into the second round. Isanovic was a CSC Academic All-Disctrict and All-America honoree as a Sun Devil back in 2021.
The Cougars' starting opposite hitter for the past three seasons, Katy Ryan, is also a three-time CSC Academic All-District selection following Tuesday's announcement. Ryan, the WSU Student Athlete of the Month for the month of October, is an Elementary Education major who averaged 2.27 kills/set while hitting .279 during her junior season. A former Pac-12 All-Freshman selection, Ryan earned honorable mention all-conference honors this season and had 13 matches with double-digit kills.
The 2023 Academic All-District® Volleyball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced Jan. 9, 2024.
Washington State reached 20 wins for a third consecutive season this Fall, the first such stretch since 1995-97, as the 2023 Cougars finished with a 26-8 overall record, the highest win total for any team under Head Coach Jen Greeny and the most wins since the 1997 team that reached the NCAA Sweet 16. After back-to-back second-round defeats, the Cougars earned hosting rights for the first and second rounds of the 2023 NCAA Tournament and defended home court with wins over Grand Canyon and Dayton, respectively.
