PULLMAN, Wash. (October 25, 2023) – Washington State Women's Basketball guard Johanna Teder will miss the 2023-24 season recovering from injuries, Head Coach Kamie Ethridge announced Wednesday.
"We are saddened to announce that Johanna will miss her final season with us. Yo (Johanna) has been dealing with a prolonged acute and chronic injury for the past two years, and after pursuing every option to alleviate and manage her pain, she has come to the conclusion the best option to eliminate all pounding and loading activities for an extended period of time. It is our belief this will give her the best chance to heal and continue her professional playing career," Ethridge said. "Johanna has been an integral part of our rise up the Pac-12 standings the last three years, she has given her mind, body, and soul to our program. It is heartbreaking to be unable to watch "Yo" finish her Coug career on the court, however, she will continue to be an elite teammate and leader, and will shift her focus and help our team in different ways this year! I am so proud of Johanna and grateful for the impact she has made in our program."
"Over the past few years, I have been dealing with an injury that has greatly impacted my performance and limited my on-court contributions. After much thought, we have made the tough decision that I will not be returning to the court this year," Teder said. "I am so incredibly grateful for the support I've received from the people around me, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me and continues to help me each day. The encouragement and well-wishes from family, friends, and all of you have meant the world to me. Though I will not be playing in the Crimson and Gray this year, I look forward to supporting my teammates as much as I can from the sidelines. I am confident that this team will represent Coug Nation well and cannot wait to see what amazing things we will achieve this year with your support. Go Cougs!"
Teder started all 34 games last season, averaged 7.9 ppg, scored in double figures 15 times and shot 34.4 percent from behind the arc, finishing second on the team and eighth in the Pac-12 Conference with 59 made three-pointers. The fifth-year senior from Tartu, Estonia scored a season-high 17 points in the win over South Dakota State, made four three-pointers three times, scored 15 points in the overtime win at Oregon, 14 at USC and scored seven points in the Pac-12 Conference Tournament Championship game win over UCLA.
In the classroom, Teder earned 2022-23 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll accolades for the second straight season and also was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team while working towards two degrees in digital technology and communications advertising with a minor in fine arts.
Teder transferred to WSU after playing one season at South Plains College in Texas where she earned all-conference first-team honors after helping SPC to a 32-1 record. In her first season with the Cougars in 2020-21, Teder started all 24 games, averaged 7.1 ppg and helped WSU reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 30 seasons. Teder's junior campaign saw her start 28 games, tie for second on the team with 10.2 ppg including a team-high 56 made 3-pointers and was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after averaging 20.5 ppg in the road sweep over the Arizona schools.
